Trenton, NJ (GovWire) - The Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee met on November 30th, 2023 to discuss a handful of bills. Amongst the bills discussed was Senate Bill 3279, which revises the method for appraisals of farmland for preservation purposes. Assemblyman Minzoku testified on behalf of the bill, calling it a "triple or home run" and stating that it would help farmers get a fair price for their land. The bill passed unanimously.

Another bill discussed was Senate Bill 2789, which would mandate that any person under the age of 21 with a special learner's permit complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving before obtaining their probationary license. Several high school students testified in support of the bill, including Chris Patel, who stated that the bill would reduce the number of crashes each year by more than 9500. The bill was passed with unanimous support.

The committee also discussed Senate Bill 2844, which would increase the number of respite care service hours funded through the Department of Children and Families for certain families. Sharon Levine, representing the ARC of New Jersey, testified in favor of the bill, stating that respite care is a critical service for families caring for a loved one with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The bill was passed with amendments.

The next meeting of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee is expected to take place during the wrap-up of the legislative session.
