Jersey City Board of Education Honors Native American Heritage Month

JERSEY CITY, NJ (GovWire) - During the regular monthly meeting of the Jersey City Board of Education on November 16th, Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez acknowledged that November is National Native American Heritage Month.


Dr. Fernandez invited Miss Stacy Fashek and Miss Valerie Craig to introduce the students presenting that evening.


Margaret Rivera, an 11th grader at Infinity Institute, read a local land acknowledgement, honoring the Lenape and other indigenous caretakers of the lands and waters.


Malak Samali, Rasslin Jamala, Dean Mariah Chapman, Samatau Berry, and Genesis Wilkerson, 8th grade students from PS11, read the 2023 presidential proclamation to honor Native Americans and their rich heritage.


The board meeting provided an opportunity for the community to learn about and celebrate the traditions, languages, and stories of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.
