JERSEY CITY, NJ (GovWire) - At the recent Jersey City Municipal Caucus Meeting, several youth and community development initiatives were discussed that would greatly benefit the community. These initiatives aim to improve the lives of Jersey City residents, particularly the youth.

One of the initiatives discussed was the Youth Mental Health First Aid grant, which was accepted by the Department of Recreation and Youth Development. This grant will provide training for approximately 600 kids in the area of mental health first aid.

Another initiative discussed was the grant from the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services for the Municipal Alliance to combat alcoholism and drug abuse.

Donalda James, the program manager for Hopwa and Violence Prevention Grant, presented a grant through CDBG to address the residual effects of COVID. The grant was split into two awards of $250,000 each, which would cover a two-year period. This will address youth activities and re-entry program services.

When asked about the process for evaluating the success of these grants, Ms. James stated that surveys will be developed to measure the progress of the youth from educational activities and the decrease in disciplinary actions in schools. They also plan to look at the decreasing level of violence in the community.

These initiatives are just a few of the many steps being taken by the city to improve the lives of its residents. The impact of these initiatives is sure to be felt throughout the city, as residents can look forward to a brighter future.
