JERSEY CITY, NJ (GovWire) - During a recent budget hearing for the Department of Housing, Economic Development, and Commerce with the Jersey City Municipal Council, the topic of commerce was discussed. The Director of the Division of Commerce, Orango, reported that the revenue for the division has increased by 6% over the last year, with a total of $11,177,000 collected through October. The Director also reported that the Cannabis Control Board received 34 applications this year, with 29 being approved, bringing the total number of approved applications to 53. Additionally, the division has transferred about 40 liquor licenses throughout the city.
The Director also discussed the division's goals for 2024, which include maximizing revenue from cannabis license fees and the 2% tax collection, working closely with the Quality of Life division to identify unlicensed businesses in the city, and continuing to cross-train employees.
Councilman Buggiano raised concerns about the lack of enforcement of laws and regulations, particularly on weekends. He stated that he has been asking for an increase in manpower for the division for several years. The Director responded that the division is working with the Prosecutor's Office to ensure that fines are issued and enforced.
