TOMS RIVER, NJ (GovWire) - Toms River Regional Schools Board of Education held a committee meeting on November 15, 2023, to discuss various topics, including the budget, finance, curriculum, and building and grounds. The meeting was announced to the public through a notice published in the Asbury Park Press and the Star Ledger on November 1st, 2023, which constituted at least 48 hours notice as required by law under the open Public Meetings Act.

One of the main topics of discussion was the John Bennett Athletic Center, commonly known as the bubble. The bubble, which is close to 15 years old, is in need of replacement. The cost of the full renovation, including all upgrades, is roughly $2.9 million. The board discussed the potential for new flooring, which would increase the revenue capabilities of the facility. Board member, Mrs. Howe, expressed interest in looking into the flag football regulation size turf to use in the bubble. The flooring would cost around $400,000 and has a lifespan of 8-10 years. Board member, Mr. Nardini, asked if the bubble replacement would be included in the 2425 budget, to which Mr. Doring replied that it is highly likely that it would be proposed as a capital reserve project for 2425.

The board also discussed the Toms River Intermediate School South grounds, where a depression has formed along the area where people walk around the track. The depression is currently being resolved, and the board is looking into the cause of the depression. Board member, Mrs. Anna, asked if the depression is anywhere in the vicinity of the water main that runs underneath the property, to which Mr. Wagner replied that the water main will be checked out for certain.

The board also discussed the recently completed Group 2 referendum improvements at high school North, Intermediate South, and the Early Learning Center at 1144. The contractor is proceeding through punch lists and nearing completion. The board also received bids on the limited window replacement at Washington Street and West Dover.

The meeting ended with a public comment session, but seeing no public, the meeting was closed. The next BOE meeting will be held at Intermediate East on Tuesday.

Overall, the meeting was productive, with the board members actively participating in discussions and debates. The board members were respectful towards each other and were able to come to a consensus on various topics. The meeting was a great example of how a board of education should function, with the members working together towards the betterment of the school district.
