GovWire

TOMS RIVER, NJ (GovWire) - Toms River Regional Schools recently held a Board of Education meeting where Mr. Thomas presented the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) report for the period of January 1st to June 30th, 2023. The report showed an 18% increase in the number of reportable offenses, with 116 acts of violence, 49 damages to property, 16 weapons, 81 substance abuses, and 88 confirmed cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying, for a total of 350 incidents.

Mr. Thomas stated that reducing incidents and addressing the issues behind them will continue to be a priority for all school stakeholders. He mentioned that the district has fostered several community partnerships to address the impacts of addiction, support mental health and well-being, and promote overall school safety.

The district also offers various character-based and social-emotional educational platforms to promote self and social awareness and citizenship. Schools have put intervention programs in place, like responsive classrooms and positive behavioral support systems. These efforts are highlighted district-wide throughout dozens of activities during the Week of Respect, Red Ribbon Week, School Violence Awareness Week, and Child Assault Prevention Week.

The report and its findings were met with concern from the board members, who emphasized the importance of student safety and well-being. The board will continue to review SSDS data and work towards reducing incidents and promoting a positive school climate.
