TOMS RIVER, NJ (GovWire) - At a recent meeting of the Toms River Regional Schools Super Safe Schools Committee, school security teams were a hot topic of discussion. The meeting, held on November 6, 2023, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including school administrators, law enforcement officers, and representatives from the New Jersey Department of Education.

One of the key speakers at the meeting was Ralph Salamani, the coordinator of safety and security for Toms River schools. Salamani spoke about the various layers of security in place in the district's schools, including unarmed security guards, safety officers, and school resource officers. He also emphasized the importance of the district's collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.

"We have a great relationship and a great community here in Toms River," Salamani said. "We forged that relationship and we want to continue to do that. So that's why we have meetings like this where we can talk about our community and talk about the security measures that are in place, keeping our children safe, which is our first priority."

Another speaker, Taran Ritacco, the Sergeant of the juvenile unit in the prosecutor's office, spoke about the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and educators. She also mentioned the use of a web filtering platform called Securely, which helps to identify concerning behaviors among students.

"We collect it. We also in certain cases create and generate a report that goes to the state police and the FBI, depending on the circumstances, depending on the age of the child," Ritacco said.

The meeting also featured a presentation by Thomas Gambino from the New Jersey Department of Education, who spoke about the state's School Safety Specialist Academy and the importance of ongoing training for school security personnel.

Overall, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to come together and discuss the important issue of school security. As Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent Mike Sitter said in his opening remarks, "Our number one thought and practice each and every day is a safe environment for [students] to learn in. That is our number one thought and practice each and every day and we cannot do it alone."
