TOMS RIVER, NJ (GovWire) - At a recent meeting of the Toms River Regional Schools Super Safe Schools Committee, speakers discussed the latest New Jersey legislation and regulations on school safety and security. Thomas Gambino, from the New Jersey Department of Education, highlighted the state's efforts to keep students and staff members safe. He mentioned the new revision to the MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) in New Jersey, which is expected to come out any day now. The MOA is a collaboration between law enforcement and educators, which outlines how they will coordinate their activities and what must be reported to the police.

Jeff Gale, Director of the Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning, spoke about the importance of the School Safety Specialist Academy. He said, "New Jersey is one of only less than 10 states in the country that have an Academy of this type." He also mentioned that other states are struggling to do what New Jersey is doing and are trying to model their academies after New Jersey's.

Taran Ritacco, Sergeant of the Juvenile Unit in the Prosecutor's Office, spoke about the Juvenile Justice Jeopardy program. She said, "We found from talking to your kids, from talking to students, they're getting some wrong information about the law." The program aims to educate students about the law and the consequences of their actions.

The meeting was attended by members of the Board of Education, law enforcement officers, school safety officers, and parents. There was a robust discussion about the importance of school safety and the measures being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Overall, the speakers at the meeting emphasized the importance of collaboration and communication in keeping schools safe. As Anna Palazzo, a member of the Board of Education, said, "We are all working together to make sure that our children are safe, healthy, happy, and well-educated."
