GovWire

TRENTON, NJ (GovWire) - The Trenton Board of Education recently held a meeting to discuss the budget calendar for 2024-2025 and the district's financial standing. The meeting was attended by board members, district officials, and members of the public.

During the meeting, Nicole Backlin, the first Vice President of the Trenton Education Association, presented an in-depth look at the budget calendar for 2024-2025. She explained that even though the school year had just started, planning for the next school year was already in progress. The budget calendar, which began in July, included closing out things from June 2022-2023 and moving forward to the school year 2023-2024.

Backlin went on to explain that in August, an update was sent to the county office, and in October, the budget calendar was reviewed with the leadership team. In November, the budget calendar was reviewed with the Operations Committee, and guidance was distributed to the leadership team. The Superintendent and school business administrator met with the leadership team to provide additional guidance and assistance.

The focus of the budgeting process, Backlin emphasized, is student achievement. The budget takes into account class size, projected enrollment, program offerings, technology, facilities maintenance and improvement, negotiations, teacher and student ratios, curriculum standards, and the tax impact. The goal is to stay within a 2% increase so that the budget does not have to go out for a vote.

Backlin also reported that the district is in good financial standing. This was met with agreement from other board members, with one member stating that the district had received a significant increase in interest earned for the month of October.

The meeting ended with the board members thanking the speakers for their presentations and comments. It is clear that the budget calendar for 2024-2025 and the district's financial standing are important issues for the Trenton Board of Education and the community. The board will continue to work towards ensuring the best possible education for the students of Trenton.
