EDISON, NJ (GovWire) - The Edison Board of Education met on November 14th to discuss administration and curriculum reports. The meeting was attended by board members, including Mr. Rochelle Patel, who presented the curriculum committee report.

During the meeting, Mr. Patel discussed the district's plans to offer a 24/7 enrichment program with live chat support to all students from K to 12. The district reviewed Varsity Tutors, which provides personalized learning to offer the enrichment program. Varsity Tutors will provide one-on-one virtual learning, called high dosage tutoring, to Edison High School students who are Title 1 eligible, utilizing EHS Title 1 funds. Along with Title 1 funded services to 986 EHS students, Varsity Tutors agreed to offer free on-demand learning to all district students from K to 12.

The committee expressed support for the proposed Varsity Tutoring program and supported the district to start offering on-demand Varsity Tutor service to all students as early as January 2024. Mr. Patel also discussed the possibility of offering more AP classes to 9th graders, but also mentioned the need for tutors for students available 24/7 to help them.

Board member Mr. Shi asked for an update on the subscription busing and bus tracking software. Dr. Alderelli, the superintendent, responded that there are currently 68 students on the waitlist for subscription busing and that the district is actively trying to identify a seat that has opened or create a route to secure transportation for these students. Dr. Alderelli also mentioned that the bus tracking software, Stop Finder, is currently being tested and will be rolled out to a small group of users before being implemented district-wide.

The meeting also included a discussion about the greenhouse at JP Stevens High School. A group of students from the greenhouse club spoke about their experiences and the positive impact the greenhouse has had on their education and the community. Board member Mr. Rivera expressed his support for the greenhouse and mentioned his desire to expand it to other schools.

Overall, the meeting was productive and provided insight into the district's plans for improving education and student support. The board members and administration showed their commitment to providing the best education and opportunities for the students of Edison.

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for December 14th at the Education Center at 7:00 PM.
